Machinery Automation & Robotics

Machinery Automation & Robotics (MAR) designs, builds and integrates automated manufacturing solutions incorporating advanced robotics for production critical industries. Investing heavily in research and development, MAR has developed its own proprietary technologies which enable its manufacturing clients to compete in a global market. The business has most recently been recognised for its work in developing a unique solar industry assembly system for its client, Ausra Inc. This system includes a reflector welding system which comprises 12 welding robots, and a mirror handling system which comprises two robots. This innovation has delivered numerous benefits to the client, including increased rates of production and improved quality and safety. Established in 1987, the business has grown to employ a team of 47 staff servicing clients across Australia and internationally, from offices in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. MAR has recently entered the American market and is looking to expand further and supply European manufacturers.

The childcare shortage in Australia has seen the business grow almost 70 per cent a year since its establishment in 2005. Over 22,000 carers have registered with Find A Babysitter.com.au and more than 12,000 Australian parents have subscribed to the service since it started. The business's extensive database is updated regularly and facilitates feedback from parents to provide customers with a comprehensive and personalised service.

Bruny Island Charters and Tasman Island Cruises provide eco-adventure cruise experiences operating out of Bruny Island and Port Arthur. Established in 1999, Bruny Island Charters has achieved enormous success enabling it to expand its operations to include the Tasman Island Cruises in December 2007. In its first year of operation, Bruny Island Charters carried 1200 passengers; this season they had a total of 28,000 people climb on board between the two operations. The business provides passengers with an insight into the untouched ecosystems of Bruny Island and the Tasman Peninsula.

Adding to its portfolio of 19 patents, the business has applied for two patents in each of 12 countries to protect its latest innovation.

The company owners are committed to preserving the environment they work in and have recently formed the Tasmanian Coast Conservation Fund. This environmental fund will benefit the management and conservation of Tasmania's precious marine and coastal environments. In the 2007/2008 financial year, Bruny Island Charters and Tasman Island Cruises donated a portion of the proceeds for every ticket sold to the Tasmanian Coast Conservation Fund, up to the amount of $40,000.

Clearmake have also developed a range of environmentally friendly, biodegradable detergents and degreasers to further optimise equipment performance. Founded in 1993, the business is 100 per cent Australian-owned and operated.

Brookfarm is a gourmet food manufacturing company located in St Helena in northern New South Wales. Brookfarm began selling its home grown macadamia goods at the local market in 2000, and now distributes its products throughout Australia and internationally, to the United States of America, the United Kingdom, South East Asia, Scandinavia, New Zealand and Canada. Brookfarm products include natural and infused macadamia oils and macadamia mueslis. All Brookfarm products are GM-free and are made and manufactured in the Byron hinterlands. The Brookfarm macadamia plantation produces five varieties of macadamia from over 4,500 trees.

EnviroSys is the accumulation of five years of recognised research and development in the provision of information management systems to the environment industry and operates in the mining, oil and gas, infrastructure and government sectors.

The Sydney-based business was established in 2003 as an alternative to the vast majority of real estate agents who represent vendors only. propertybuyer acts exclusively for buyers purchasing residential and commercial real estate, and works with related service suppliers, such as specialist mortgage brokers and financiers, to make the process of buying a home or investment property simple and efficient. propertybuyer has grown from a home-based business to owning its own office premises and employing five staff.

Platinum Electrical Contractors was formed in 2001 and provides electrical contracting services to the industrial and commercial markets. Platinum Electrical Contractors currently employs over 30 staff who operate mobile service vehicles specialising in electrical installations, repairs and maintenance. Platinum Electrical Contractors successfully introduced the use of wireless pen-pads to its business, enabling the electronic integration of job sheet details with management software. Platinum Electrical Contractors is based in Blacktown and has clients throughout Sydney, with plans to franchise in late 2007. In 2006, Platinum Electrical Contractors featured among BRW's list of Fastest Growing Start-Up Companies.

Danley Construction Products Pty Ltd designs and manufactures concrete joint products for the building and construction industry throughout Australasia. Established in 1987, Danley has grown from a small garage operation to an Australia-wide business and today is the holder of patented products and distributor of 200 products. Danley recognises the needs of the industry to help control the cracking of concrete, and incorporates research, design and product testing into every product they manufacture. Ongoing liaison with those in the concrete industry allows Danley to create holistic, innovative solutions and offer technical advice and support from project inception to end.

AVKO Mining Pty Ltd was established in 1993 and specialises in all aspects of underground mining, in particular shaft sinking, bulk sample excavations and ground support. Based in West Kalgoorlie, AVKO Mining currently has operations in Western Australia, Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales and recently excavated a significant ore pass in Papua New Guinea. AVKO Mining also provides labour and machinery hire services to mine sites around Australia, and encourages hands-on training of student engineers, introducing a work experience training program for students to enhance their skills and knowledge of underground mining.

The business was chosen to be part of a clinical trial at the Royal Brisbane Hospital Burns Unit.
