Crowne Plaza Alice Springs

The operation of a large and luxurious hotel in Central Australia poses challenges across all aspects of the business – transport, food and beverage, staffing, facilities and maintenance. Offering first-class tourism experiences while protecting the integrity of a World Heritage landscape poses extra difficulties. But Crowne Plaza Alice Springs has turned these challenges into an opportunity to save costs and demonstrate what is possible with innovative thinking by installing the largest roof-mounted solar system in the Southern Hemisphere. Nearly 1500 kilowatt-hours per day are now being generated through the 1326 solar panels, providing between 40-80 per cent of the hotel’s power requirements. The solar system has also become a showcase for inspiring others, with in-room TVs and the hotel’s foyer display informing staff and guests in real time of the system’s performance in terms of power generated and greenhouse gases saved.
