2009 Western Australian Winner of the businessowner Micro-Business Award

Loose Goose Chalets

The market niche carved out by Loose Goose Chalets did not happen by chance. Using real estate and tourist trends, current statistics, local business knowledge and a lot of hard work, the owners of Loose Goose Chalets identified a gap in the tourism market for disabled-friendly holiday accommodation and sought to fill it with a carefully selected location in Nannup, south west WA. After modifications to make the accommodation wheelchair friendly and a little marketing, owners Laraine and Grant have tripled the occupancy rates since taking ownership of the property. In making the facilities more wheelchair friendly, they have also won favour with elderly people with mobility difficulties and parents with prams who make use of the easy access and open layouts. Loose Goose has plans for more wheelchair friendly facilities including a playground for adults and children incorporating specialised equipment to allow children in wheelchairs to experience swings.

2009 Western Australian Winner of the Panasonic Australia Medium Business Award

Lavan Legal

Formed through a merger of Bennett & Co and Phillips Fox Perth in 2006, Lavan Legal is challenging the boundaries of marketing and business development with its quirky advertising strategies. Whether it be the bright red Lavan neon sign on the roof of the Quadrant building, the red Lavan Legal Kombi driving up and down The Terrace, the Lavan Legal plane flying its banner along the Swan River or the 3-D images of its partners featured on its website, Lavan Legal keeps people guessing. The founding partners of Lavan Legal recognised there was a gap in the market for a firm that could address the needs of the local market by offering the personalised attention and commitment to clients of a small boutique practice combined with the structure, resources and experience of a major firm. By successfully building the Lavan Legal brand, the firm has established itself in a mature market against long established brands and client relationships.

2009 Western Australian Winner of the AMP Innovation Award

Sea To Summit

What started as a quest to equip a Mt Everest climb has resulted in an established brand, Sea to Summit, in the Australian outdoor/ adventure equipment market. Adventure sports require both courage and innovation, and the founders of Sea to Summit, mountaineers Tim Macartney-Snape and Roland Tyson, have brought the same level of both to their business venture. The business has achieved success through the development of an accessories category in the outdoor market and has quickly come to dominate it through strong product design, innovation, high margins, market leading packaging and a sales team that customers love dealing with. Sea to Summit plans to expand their product range by investing more resources into designing new products that push the boundaries to meet the needs of those passionate about being outdoors.
